Common Sense: A Eulogy

Yesterday kids were being hauled off for attempted assault. Today it's for sexual harassment. Acording to John Feehery, "We have killed common sense" and I would agree. So why does Junior go to lock up? "Because it is better to ignore common sense than to be liable to a lawsuit. This kid must be prosecuted by the police because that is what the book says. No matter that the book is stupid." Well I'm glad that there is someone else out there that agrees with me that we have some major problems in society.

Meanwhile, it would appear that the Pope's age is getting to him as his recently announced schedule includes a stop at the Park Street Synagogue in New York. In an official statement about the stop, it was clarified that this is a "personal and informal visit... not part of his official program." Perhaps he's just stopping in to attend funeral services for Common Sense?

Science in Your Life

As if Lucy did not cause enough problems, "a recently discovered fish that crawls instead of swimming and has forward-looking eyes like humans could be part of an entirely unknown family of fishes." Could this fish be the crazy ancestor of humans? Or will creationists snuff this one out? On a random side note today at the Houston Museum of Natural Science I overhead someone say "We don't say the E word here."

Your Government at Work...

Everyone likes to complain about earmarks... and the 'Pig Book' makes it easier to identify who the big porkers are. The Citizens Against Government Waste tallied up $17.2 Billion in over 11,500 pet projects inserted in spending bills during the Sept. 06-07 fiscal year. "One constant is that even at $17.2 billion, earmarked projects remain a tiny portion — about six-tenths of one percent — of the $2.7 trillion in total federal spending." It is still $17 Billion people! Common Sense would tell us not to trivialize it.... oh wait. It's dead. Curious to know where the rest of your tax dollars go?

Anyone want to bet that the studying of bears dancing in the forest is also someone's earmark?

Dear Allan,

In reference to the “science in your life” section, I would like to recommend “Your Inner Fish,” by Dr. Neil Shubin. This is a very well written book on early (375 million years old) fish fossils and their relevance to the evolution of life on our planet. On the topic of the “e word” please know that the term evolution is used in the Lucy exhibit, as well as on the museum’s website on Lucy. Perhaps the person you overheard was mistaken in his or her assumption.

Kind regards,

I thought it was an ironic thing to hear at a museum. No worries, it was not a staff member!

Thanks for the book suggestion and I'm glad to see that someone from HMNS responded!

P.S. The Lucy exhibit is GREAT!

Once again this blog finds itself in The Morning Scramble of No Runny Eggs. While you are there be sure to check out the Gutterball Humor; anytime a politician makes a fool out of themselves trying to act more "human" it's a good time had by all.
