Master Sgt. Woodrow Wilson Keeble You Rock!
The year is 1951, you are in Korea, and probably one of the only members of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Siux tribe serving in the U.S. Military... not only do you put up with your army buddies saying "How" each time they see you, but after saving their asses by single-handedly taking out multiple machine gun nests and 16 enemy soldiers from the low position... your application to be honored for your heroism is lost. But not to worry, 25 years after you die you will get the Medal of Honor!
And in Other Wars...
Speaking of rocks, did you know that if you are arrested for having 1 gram of crack rock the sentencing is equal to having 100 grams of cocaine? For whatever reasons, the U.S. congress passed a law creating this sentencing discrepancy as part of the "War on Drugs" which was so amazingly successful of filling our prisons with people who just wanted to hurt themselves in the first place that we ensure our 1 out of 100 American's are in jail. Well there is finally some reprieve!
I don't do cocaine, so why do I care? Well the harsh sentences for crack were put into federal law amid a "panic" set off by the apparently swift and corrosive arrival of crack in America's inner cities during the 1980s, and I despise when the federal government makes stupid and hasty decisions.
The results were immediate and the racial component was obvious... the black community is poorer and users there buy crack because it's cheaper. More affluent whites buy powder. It's the same drug, but when you get arrested for crack, you're doing far more time.
Meanwhile, an undercover narcotics officer said he's noticed little difference between the crack dealers and cocaine dealers he encounters. Higher-level drug traffickers are more likely to have large quantities of powder cocaine, which they in turn sell to street-level dealers who make it into crack, which can be sold more cheaply.
Speaking of silly ways governments try to deal with problems, the U.N. Security Council approved a third round of sanctions against Iran. Sanctions don't actually do anything and this round including banning dual use civilian-military good sales to Iran. Can someone name something that is NOT dual use? President Ahmadinejad... don't even think about saying your "civilian" nuclear program is not!
The resolution also orders countries to freeze the assets of 12 additional companies and 13 individuals with links to Iran's nuclear or ballistic missile programs - and require countries to "exercise vigilance" and report the travel or transit of those Iranians. It imposes a travel ban on five individuals linked to Iran's nuclear effort.
Meanwhile, Indonesia wonder's why no one can take them seriously... perhaps its because Indonesia's U.N. Ambassador Marty Natalegawa, told the council that his nation had confidence in the International Atomic Energy Agency's ability to handle the dispute over Iran's nuclear program, rather than the security council intervening with further sanctions. Confidence in IAEA? Are you smoking crack?
