We all know that drugs come from just across the border down in Mexico, but we tend to forget about that whole "war on drugs" thing. And what a war it is! "More than 20,000 Mexican troops and federal police are engaged in a multi-front war with the private armies of rival drug lords." As usual, the U.S. is on both sides of the problem as weapons and trained officers have defected to the sides of the drug dealers for higher pay, and now the "Bush administration has proposed a $500 million annual aid package to help combat Mexico's $23 billion a year drug trade." See what Bill Hicks has to say about this. I tend to agree with his point of view on the issue.
Perhaps if guns were banned that would solve the problem? Yeah... right! That hasn't worked so far for Washington, DC and today they are facing a challenge in the supreme court on the issue. Thankfully, "a majority of US Supreme Court justices appear poised to embrace an individual rights view of the Second Amendment." The argument for those of you who missed American history and government classes... Does the 2nd amendment imply that states can have militias or that people can have guns? It's all about the comma!
The Second Amendment, as passed by the House and Senate, reads:
| “ | A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. | ” |
The original and copies distributed to the states, and then ratified by them, had different capitalization and punctuation:
| “ | A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. |
And speaking of arms... there is news regarding robotic ones! "The space station's gigantic new robot, Dextre, rose like Frankenstein from its transport bed early Sunday, enabling spacewalking astronauts to attach its 11-foot arms."
