At the first political event I attended in Fort Bend County after decided I would run for Congress one of the speakers said "Don't waste time with youth, they don't vote." Despite the existence of the Youth Vote Coalition.
Regardless I defiantly worked on targeting youth by having a presence on Facebook and MySpace, which a year ago was rare and now has become the political norm. I even flirted with YouTube and Flickr, but I just didn't have to resources/time to keep it going. (Now that I'm out, I may go back to developing it.)
I also had an idea to target teenagers who could not vote yet, get they psyched up about it and perhaps they would encourage their parents to vote. MSNBC had this article on how Kids love campaign 2008, focused on the presidential election, but it shows that there is defiantly something to what I wanted to do.
While we all know about "Wiihabilitation" and "Wiitirement Homes"... but we do not have any political embrace using the Wii Vote Channel. Talk about a place to get some youth voter input! I tried running the question "Would you be willing to vote for a 25 year old for congress." But I never saw the question get asked. It would be fun if Nintendo would allow something simple such as "Do you plan to vote?"
